Proposed Amendment to the Undergraduate Student Constitution

A proposed amendment to the Undergraduate Student Constitution will be on the ballot this election cycle. Voting on the act of referendum approving the proposed amendment will begin on Monday, October 28 at 8 a.m. CT, and end at 4 p.m. CT on Friday, November 1. A summary of the proposed amendment, approved by College Council, is as follows: Though both the Constitution and Bylaws of the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) currently reference a “Judicial Council,” such a body does not currently exist in practice. This act of referendum formally establishes the Judicial Council, giving it the power to interpret and enforce compliance with the Constitution and Bylaws of USG. This council shall consist of five members: an elected Chief Judge, as well as four Associate Judges that shall be appointed by unanimous consent between the President of USG, Chair of College Council, and the Chief Judge. These appointees shall then be confirmed by a three-quarters majority vote of College Council. Provisions are made within the amendment to ensure both the neutrality of the members and to ensure that members remove themselves from hearing cases in which there is a conflict-of-interest; members may be removed for nonfeasance, misfeasance, or malfeasance by College Council. The redlined full text of proposed changes to the current Constitution can be found here. A list of all changes proposed can be found in Appendix 4 of this document.
